How to Create Bootable Windows 10 USB Drive/DVD

To install a fresh Windows 10 on your computer, you need a bootable Windows 10 USB or DVD. It is a good idea to have one of these as they help in repairing your PC also.

The steps to create bootable Windows 10 USB or DVD are fairly simple. Gone are the days when you have to use third-party tools to create a bootable USB Drive. Now, Microsoft has its own tool that lets you create a bootable USB flash drive or DVD effortlessly. Let’s look at how to do that.

You will need a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space. Note that this process will erase all the data on the USB drive, so it is better to use an empty drive. Since you will be downloading Windows 10, you will require an internet connection. The process might take around 30 minutes, which depends on the speed of your internet connection.

How to Create Bootable Windows 10 USB Drive

Go to Windows 10 Download page, and download Media Creation Tool. Now run the Media Creation Tool.



You will see Microsoft Software License Terms. Read and click on the Accept button to accept the conditions.



Now you will see two options, Upgrade this PC now and Create installation media. Choose Create installation media and click Next.



If you are creating the bootable media with the same configuration as the current PC you are using, click Next. Otherwise, untick Use the recommended options for this PC.



Then select language, edition, and architecture according to the PC you plan to use this bootable media.

You can check the architecture of the PC in the manual of your PC manufacturer. Or you can type About your PC in the start menu and select it, then look at the System type.



After selecting the details click Next.



Now select the USB flash drive option and click Next.



Then select the USB drive and click Next. If there are different USB drives and you are unsure which one is the correct one, unplug other USB drives.



The process is going to take some time, depending upon the internet connection. Once the process gets completed, click on Finish and use the bootable USB flash drive to install Windows 10.



Create a Bootable Windows 10 DVD

To create a bootable DVD, you need to choose ISO file option and click Next.



Then select the location to save the ISO file. You need to burn the ISO file on the DVD later with any external DVD burner.



Now Media Creation Tool will download Windows 10 and create an ISO. Use any popular DVD burner to burn it on the DVD and then boot your PC with it to install Windows 10.
