LG smartphone with roll-up screen and extra display
« on: February 14, 2021, 02:10:49 PM »

Much has already been said and written about the LG Rollable smartphone that is expected later in 2021. LG Electronics has repeatedly shown a teaser of this rollable smartphone. In particular, the front and the pull-out display are shown. No information is yet known about the back. Last week, LetsGoDigital already reported on a rollable smartphone from LG with a second display on the back.

Today, the Korean manufacturer has been awarded a design patent for a retractable smartphone with a retractable screen. This LG smartphone also has a second display integrated on the back. The screen is smaller this time, but with a more logical and more standard aspect ratio. This seems to be an excellent alternative.

The patent was filed by LG Electronics at the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) in early 2020. The documentation was released today, February 12, 2021 and includes 16 product images and a brief description.

The patented LG retractable smartphone has thin screen edges and can be pulled out on one side, after which the display area is enlarged from the left. Unfolded, the display is about 40% larger than in its most compact form. It is a stylish and futuristic device to behold.

The rail system is visible at the rear. For the sliding mechanism, a similar rail system was used as in the model we discussed last week. The back of the mobile phone is also made of glass, as is clear from the documentation.

Furthermore, a vertical camera system has been installed on the back in the top left corner. This houses a triple camera and a flash. No information is yet known about the configuration, it may be a similar camera set-up as the LG Wing - this was the first LG smartphone to be part of the new Explorer Project, which will also include the Rollable.

At least as striking at the rear is the second screen. A rectangular screen has been added, an ideal size for taking self-portraits. This second screen allows users to take selfies with the main camera. This display can also provide a solution for video calls. Moreover, this solution makes it possible to deliver a full-screen experience, after all, no notches or holes in the screen need to be made for the front camera at the front.

Several buttons are visible on the side. The power button is mounted at thumb height. A little further down is an elongated knob, most likely intended for the volume control. What is special is that the speaker is also situated on the side of the device. Furthermore, a microphone has been placed on both the top and bottom. In addition, the bottom offers access to the USB-C connection to charge the rollable smartphone.

The most recent teaser that LG Electronics showed during CES 2021 showed that the smartphone does not have a notch or punch-hole camera. It is therefore certainly not inconceivable that the LG Rollable that will be presented later this year will also have a second screen at the rear. Finally, it simply seems to be too early to integrate the camera under the flexible display. The LG rollable smartphone is likely to be released in the second half of 2021.
