An extension named “Google Images Restored” is available on the add-on stores for Chrome and Firefox browsers to disable the new Google images design that went live on August 6 of this year, the extension is working as stated by the developer.

This August 2019, Google rolled out a new design to Google image search results for the desktop where if you select an image, it will be displayed on the right-side panel on the page and stays as you scroll, this makes it easier for you to compare images with others in search results.

Google claims you’ll find the change useful when you do shopping, the selected image in the side panel will display brand, price, availability, and reviews. You can go back wherever you’re before by clicking on the back button and the captions shown for related images under the selected image lets you know where you’re heading before clicking.

The extension apart from reverting Google images to the old design, adds a “view image’ button to the selected image and removes “related searches” from the image search results.

The extension developer writes his extension “attempts to make Google images looks and feel like it did before they changed everything on August 6th”. Developer says he tried to bring the old layout from scratch and accepts its not perfect, promises he’ll fix a few issues.

After installing the extension, head to Google search and click on “Images” or visit  images.google.com to perform an image search to notice the change.
