Inching closer to the final release of Ubuntu 9.04, codenamed as “Jaunty Jackalope”, the Ubuntu development team has come up with the release candidate (RC) for the upcoming operating system.
The Ubuntu team notified that the new RC is complete, stable, and apt for testing by any user, but it also cautioned that it still contains a few known bugs, which are vowed to be squashed before the final release.
However, the RC includes some notable improvements and a couple of additions, including speedier boost times, ext4 filesystem support, and an enhanced notification system.
Along with this, the inclusion of Gnome 2.26, which incorporates Brasero as the default CD burning tool, accounted for major improvements in desktop and, perhaps most noticeably, some significant improvements in Evolution 2.26.1 tool to make it function better with Microsoft Exchange Server suite.
Besides, Ubuntu 9.04 further incorporates Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud that is an important move towards integrating cloud computing into its suite using Eucalyptus.
In a bid to cater to netbook domains, Ubuntu Remix enhances boot-up times considerably, integrates a user-friendly interface and is said to support some of the prominent netbooks, including Dell Mini 9, Asus Eee PC 900, and Acer Aspire One.
Jaunty Jackalope is the ninth iteration of Ubuntu and could well be the one which will allow the operating system to finally make it to mainstream. More interestingly, the developers have chosen a rather monolithic approach as the OS will be targetting everything from netbooks to servers. Interestingly, JJ will be launched almost as the same time as Windows 7.
