Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to fixing the black screen issue in Windows 10, which is caused by faulty AMD drivers. After a series of Technical Previews and Insider Betas, Microsoft Corporation finally released the final build of Windows 10 earlier this week. Instead of a traditional roll-out strategy, Microsoft is offering the OS as an update to existing Windows 7 and 8.1 owners. Just two days into its release, over 67 million users upgraded to Windows 10. The OS has received rave reviews from users and critics alike, and is being touted as lightweight and efficient.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Quite a few users have been facing delayed boot-up issues. The issue is reportedly caused due to faulty AMD graphic card drivers. Once the Windows Logo disappears during the boot process, the user is shown a black screen with a mouse cursor in the sentence. Reportedly, users have to wait up to 1 minute on the same screen until the login screen appears, and it’s smooth sailing after that. For an OS that’s being touted as lightweight, such elongated boot times are unacceptable, which is why users have flocked to Microsoft forums complaining about the issue. Here’s how you can fix it:
How To Fix AMD Driver Issues On Windows 10

Windows 10 installs updates automatically, so it’s highly likely that you have the latest AMD Catalyst 15.7.1 drivers. To fix the issues, you need to revert to the earlier drivers.

Step 1: Bring up the Start Menu and navigate to Settings > System.

Step 2: Select the Apps and Features Tab from the left pane. Locate AMD Catalyst Install Manager from the listand click Uninstall.

Step 3: Select Yes when the UAC prompt appears for the access request. The uninstall will now proceed and driver will be removed once it completes.

Step 4: Download the earlier 15.7 version of AMD Catalyst drivers, depending on your system architecture, from here.

Step 5: Once the download is complete, run the executable file and extract the install files for the driver to a specified location. Close the setup once the extraction has completed.

Step 6: Bring up the Start Menu and open up the Device Manager. Under Display drivers, locate Microsoft Basic Display. This item shows up because currently no drivers are installed for the display. Right-click on the icon and click Update.

Step 7: In the resulting dialog box, select Browse and navigate to the folder where Catalyst 15.7 has been extracted. The default is C:AMD. Click Okay and the driver wizard should automatically locate the driver within the folder and install it.

Now just reboot your PC and boot times should turn back to normal.
