Ice Cream Sandwich to bring Honeycomb to Android phones
« on: February 04, 2011, 07:21:50 PM »
Honeycomb may not be coming to smartphones, but that doesn’t mean that Android-equipped won’t get a taste of the tablet-only OS.

Although Google stated that it has only just started thinking about bringing some of Android 3.0′s features, it has reportedly already began working on a new build of its operating system that will let phone owners get a taste of Honeycomb. According to Phandroid, who spoke to a source close to the matter, Android 2.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) will bring some of the elements found in Google’s tablet optimized platform over to smartphones.

It still remains a mystery which of Honeycomb’s features will make their way on to Ice Cream-equipped handsets, but its likely that similar UI elements and the new notifications system will make an appearance. Phandroid also guess that “hardware acceleration and RenderScrip” are also likely to make it onboard.

No official word on when Ice Cream Sandwich will be landing, although it’s likely to be announced at Google‘s IO conference in May, with a June/July launch to follow
