We’ve known for some time now that Microsoft has added the ability to record video gameplay footage in Windows 10, thanks to the
Game DVR feature in the new operating system.
But it appears that the company has extended this option outside of games too.
That is to say, that users have the option to capture their screen when using any app. It has been tested and apparently it only works with applications — it is not possible to record the desktop. The feature set is pretty barebones, but then again, this is a simple function available for free.
And a neat alternative to professional screen capture software, like
Camtasia, for instance.
Anyway, as reported, all you have to do is press
Winkey + G (Winkey being the
Windows key) and that brings up a toolbar that allows you to take a screenshot or capture video.
The video is restricted to 1080p, and the minimum hardware specifications include an Intel HD Graphics 4000, GeForce 600/800M or the AMD Radeon HD 7000 series graphics chips.
Recordings are saved in the Videos/Captures folder, in the universally popular MP4 format and can also be accessed via the Xbox app, which allows for the possibility to perform some basic edits like trimming and whatnot.
Overall, a welcome addition after all these years of users asking for native screen recording support.
