Buying a new tablet?
Don't forget to check these specs before reaching into your wallet.

These days, tablets are almost as popular as laptops. They're lightweight, convenient, and often more useful for certain functions like drawing or entertainment. But not all tablets are the same. A range of different factors make certain tablets great for some people, but not so much for others. So, here are the six most important specs to check before buying a tablet.

1. Screen Resolution and Type

Screen resolution is an important factor in most devices, And given that a tablet is almost entirely a screen, you want to make sure the tablet you're buying won't let you down when it comes to the display.

If you just want a tablet for reading or simply as a backup for your laptop, you don't need to concern yourself too much with the resolution. However, if you want to use your tablet as your main device, or if you want to stream videos or use it for drawing, searching for a higher resolution will certainly pay off.

The resolution you need will depend on the size of the tablet you want. A small tablet is unlikely to have a high resolution, but you'll need to watch out for the resolution if you want a larger model.

Take the Lenovo Tab P11, for example. This has an 11-inch screen, making it a relatively large tablet. To make up for this, it has a resolution of 2000x1200. Alternatively, the Lenovo Tab M7, with a seven-inch screen, only has a resolution of 1024x600p. So keep this size-to-resolution relationship noted when shopping around for a new tab.

In terms of screen type, there are two main options on the market right now: LCD and OLED. OLED is considered the higher quality option of the two, given its ability to provide a more vivid and colorful display. Depending on your budget or needs, either display may work best for you, or even both.

2. Storage Capacity

Storage capacity is another key factor that you should check before buying a tablet. In fact, it might even be the most important factor of all, depending on what you want to use your tablet for.

Different laptops offer different storage capacities, some of which may be too low for what you're looking for. Suppose you want to store a considerable number of songs or other files on your tablet, or you want to use it to edit and store pictures or videos. In that case, you might be better off opting for a tablet with a slightly higher storage capacity.

There are several tablets on the market right now that have large storage capacities. Most modern iPads, such as the 11 or 12.9, offer enough storage space for most customers. If you're not into Apple products, check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ or ASUS ZenPad 3S 10.

3. Battery Life

Given that most people use tablets wirelessly, away from a desk and charger, it's important to make sure your tablet of choice doesn't have poor battery life. Streaming apps, scrolling through social media, all these actions can quickly drain your tablet's battery life and can become a problem when you're out of the house, too.

If you only use your tablet at home, battery life of eight hours or more should be enough. However, if you use your tablet frequently or like to take it with you when you're traveling or working, check out Samsung's range of tablets. Many of them have an impressive battery life, such as the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite. Alternatively, some lesser-known brands also sell tablets with reliable battery lives, like VASTKING and CHUWI.

4. Screen Size

Some smaller laptops are great for convenience and portability, while some larger ones are perfect for entertainment. Because of this, it's important to make sure you know what size tablet you're getting.

For checking the news, reading e-books, or browsing social media, a smaller tablet should be more than enough for most. But watching Netflix or YouTube on a small screen can be pretty jarring, so opting for a larger screen for entertainment purposes is always a good idea. The same goes for creative activities. If you want to use your laptop for editing or drawing, larger displays are more suitable and easier to work with.

Note that larger screens usually come with a higher price point, especially if the resolution is also relatively high, but paying that little bit more for a more suitable device can really pay off. So, if you want a bigger screen, take a look at the Lenovo Yoga Tab, Samsung Galaxy Tab S7, or the Microsoft Surface Pro 7. If a smaller tab is what you're looking for, check out Apple iPad Mini 6 or the Lenovo Tab M8.

5. Hardware Connections

Whether it's for a charging cable, earphones, or otherwise, you shouldn't hit that "Buy" button before checking which connection ports your chosen tablet has.

Compared to laptops and computers, tablets usually have a limited set of hardware connection ports, but there are still a few you may need. These include USB-C and AUX, which are standard for most tablets. However, if you require some extra connections, such as HDMI, there are tablets available with such ports, including the Dragon Touch K10.

6. Processing Speed

The processing speed of a device determines how quickly it can respond to commands and process information. So, if your tablet has a low processing speed, you may find using it very frustrating, so it's crucial to check what kind of processor your desired tablet has before buying.

These days, the best processors out there are either quad-core or octa-core. For example, Apple and Samsung's newest tablets all have octa-core processors, which means the processing speed is pretty high. Of course, quad-core processors can also provide high processing speeds for a lower price, but these usually don't quite compare to those offered by octa-core processors.

Always Check the Specs Before Buying

While it might seem exciting to go for the most popular or aesthetically pleasing tablet you can find, it won't necessarily be the right one for you. So, by making sure you know what a tablet can offer and provide for you, you'll be able to find the perfect model to suit all your needs.
