Microsoft Considering Foldable OLED Displays For Phones
« on: December 20, 2016, 04:23:43 AM »

Seems like Microsoft is preparing for a foldable future, as the company has partnered with LG Display to integrate this new technology into upcoming phone models.

Apple and Google are other technology firms that have entered into this partnership.

This report reveals that LG Display has already developed a prototype of a foldable display that convinced these companies to sign a deal that would have them invest into improving this interesting little technology.

Not much is known about the collaboration, considering the confidential nature of the deals, but it is being claimed that LG Display is trying to gain an early advantage against its competition against Samsung Display.

Which is also heavily investing in foldable panels.

The important thing to note here is that production of these new types of displays is not expected to start until 2018. So, don’t go looking for smartphones sporting these panels next year.

If anything, late 2018 or early 2019 is when the first devices featuring these displays may hit the market.

Chances are, Microsoft could be looking at foldable displays as a potential technology for inventing new product categories. Seeing as the last few hardware launches from Redmond have all been labeled as new types of products.

And considering LG has specifically designed these to be used on both phones and tablets, we can expect foldable displays to be used in either a future Surface Phone model or new Surface slates.

For the time being, what we know is that all three technology giants are going forward with long term plans focusing on these new types of foldable panels.
