Windows 10 Update Switch – an Update Blocker
« on: December 22, 2016, 04:28:56 AM »
This is a tool designed to stop Microsoft’s big push to get all users updated in lockstep one after the other.

To recap, Windows 10 Home users can’t defer updates and Windows 10 Pro users can – but only for a maximum of 4 months.

Introducing Windows 10 Update Switch

The program basically has two options.

The first option is to disable the Windows Update service. This only provides temporary relief because Windows shrugs that off eventually.

The second (and more effective option) is to set connections to metered.

Setting a connection to metered tells Windows that your bandwidth is expensive or your internet is slow. When that happens, Windows will disable the automatic download of Windows updates, Store app updates, peer to peer uploading of updates and more.

Even though setting a connection to metered will block updates efficiently, it typically only does this for Wi-Fi and Mobile connections, but not for Ethernet connections.

The good news is, with some tweaks, Windows 10 Update Switch supports setting the Ethernet (and Wi-Fi) connection as metered.

In Summary

It seems like a pretty handy tool. Some parts may need tweaking and some third party tools but overall a solid effort and a good helper for those of you who want to block Windows 10 Updates.
