Gmail Gets Personalized Backgrounds, Email Prompts
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:20:50 PM »
Bored with the way your Gmail inbox looks? Now you can make your own!

On Thursday, Google launched the ability to personalize your Gmail inbox background by uploading your own image, or creating your own theme. Previously, users could only select from Google's pre-made themes and colors.

Themes in Gmail are great—there are tons to choose from and they give your inbox a personalized look," Google wrote in a blog post. "But we've heard from many of you who thought it would be even better if you could give Gmail an even more personalized look and create themes completely on your own." To start, click on the "Options" logo on the upper right hand corner of your inbox, then "Mail Settings." Select the "Themes" tab and "Create your own theme."

Separately on Tuesday, Gmail officially launched two Gmail Lab features that help you prevent addressing errors. Launched in beta in 2009, "Don't Forget Bob" auto-suggests someone you might have left off a group email, based on the groups of people you normally email. For example, if you frequently email your mom, dad, and sister, it might autosuggest your sister after you type in mom and dad's email addresses.

Also launched in beta in 2009, "Got the Wrong Bob?" alerts you if it thinks you're about to email the wrong person (or the wrong "Bob").

Last week Google said it would make the ads that show up in your Gmail inbox more relevant by parsing through emails and metrics used in Priority Inbox.
