New Windows 10 Feature Blocks Win32 Program Installation
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:22:38 PM »
Control, more control! Another new feature coming to Windows 10 Creators Update that Microsoft has not announced for some reason is one aimed at system administrators.

That would allow them the ability to block the installation of Win32 software on the OS.

Essentially limiting the operating system to Windows Store apps.

This new feature has been discovered in Windows 10 build 15042 that allow for the blocking of installation of traditional Win32 software on any edition — enterprise and otherwise. Apparently, this is an attempt from Microsoft to boost security and further prevent malware infections on PCs.

Win32 applications are generally the ones that are used by cybercriminals and malware authors to spread malicious files. And blocking the installation of software like this will serve as a new protection layer that ensures that no infection occurs.

The above popup screen shows up when trying to run the setup of a Win32 program on a computer with these restrictions on place tells users that they can only install apps from the Windows Store.

With the message that limiting installation to apps from the Store helps keep PC safe and reliable.

Of course, there are several implementations and a wide array of environments where this could be put to use, ranging from computers that parents give to their kids, to the education sector, to enterprise usage where data security is paramount.

We’ll probably hear Microsoft officially detail these new additions to the platform as we near the launch of the Creators Update.

Maybe even the next build release, considering the cat is already out of the bag!
