5 New Features in Windows 10 Redstone 4
« on: July 31, 2017, 11:10:46 PM »

Developing the autumn update of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is gradually coming to an end, so it's time to look into the more distant future and talk about the next version of the system. It is still known under the code name Redstone 4 and it will include some features that did not manage to get to the autumn update. The release should take place next spring, in March or April 2018, therefore there is enough time for the introduction of new functionality. Below is what I would like to see in this update.

The modern conductor

Explorer has long required an update, the last sign was in 2012 in Windows 8, when the title appeared the ribbon Office Ribbon UI. Since then, only minor changes have been made.

The conductor works quite normally, and as you know, you should not repair what is not broken. On the other hand, if something works, it does not mean that it can not be improved. It would not hurt the updated user interface and some improvements in functionality, like the ability to duplicate files in the context menu or tabs.

Tabs are the most popular query. They eliminate the need to open many windows at once and clog up the desktop.

Microsoft is going to update the system using the interface Fluent Design System and past the Explorer, these updates should not pass. Perhaps, developers will update the existing Win32 application, or they can present a new universal Windows Explorer 10. The main thing is that the design coincides with the appearance of the rest of the system.

Tabbed Shell

This function will allow you to group applications in a familiar interface with tabs, such as browser tabs. Even applications that do not themselves support tabs will be able to enter here, which will allow organizing the work on devices with small screens.

For example, users will be able to open multiple instances of one application without supporting tabs, such as Word 2016. Microsoft has already started writing code for this function; If it was not canceled, Redstone 4 is a candidate for its appearance.

Timeline

This functionality should have appeared in the fall, but in the end, this will not happen. The working code already exists in internal assemblies of Windows 10, everything works as intended. This suggests that soon insiders will get this function at their disposal.

Timeline can be called an analog of the screen of recent applications, where all the programs launched on different devices are displayed for the last few days. Clicking on the program will open it in the form in which it was last closed, which will allow continuing to work on projects and documents.

Timeline also works on smartphones. If you have a device on Android or iOS, you can share applications with them.

Cloud Clipboard

This function can be even more important to someone than the previous one. It also had to appear in the fall and was moved. Its application will allow you to copy text on one device and insert it on the other.

Constancy of design

I would like to believe that developers will remove noticeable design discrepancies between different parts of Windows 10. In the autumn update, the elements of the Fluent Design System and the old Microsoft Design Language 2 will be presented, in some areas, there will be even older elements. Inside Microsoft, this impermanence is called Zebra UI.

For example, contextual menus in the system and several pre-installed applications are extremely unstable. The autumn update will temporarily make this situation even worse since in some parts there will be new effects, but in others, there are not.
