Target selling Amazon Fire tablet for just $28
« on: November 27, 2016, 11:56:40 PM »
One of the hottest deals over this Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend has been Amazon’s Fire Tablet, which normally sells for $50, but which is currently on sale for $33.33 from Amazon and several other stores.

But if that’s not a big enough discount for you, Target is going a bit further: the retailer is selling a number of products for 15 percent off this weekend, and that includes Amazon’s cheapest tablet.

That means you can pick up an Amazon Fire 7″ tablet for $28.34 before tax, both in stores and online.

The Fire tablet features a 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel IPS display, a 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, and Amazon’s custom version of Android, called Fire OS. The entry-level model features 8GB of storage, but you can pay a bit extra to get a 16GB model.

While Fire OS makes it easy to interact with Amazon’s app, music, eBook, and video stores, it does not include access to the Google Play Store. But there are plenty of ways to hack the Amazon Fire tablet to make it behave more like a typical Android device.

For example, there are methods for rooting, changing the home screen and app launcher, or even installing custom ROMs that totally replace the software running on the tablet. Or if you’re looking for the best of both worlds, you can try installing the Play Store and keeping Amazon’s software.

One thing to keep in mind is that this tablet was first released in 2015, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon phases it out next year and replaces it with a new entry-level model. But $28 is a pretty great deal for an Android-based tablet that’s already a pretty good deal at nearly twice the price.
