Microsoft today released a new build of Windows 10 to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring. Redmond is today releasing build 15031 to Windows Insiders, which brings a new picture-in-picture mode along with several other improvements.
The new picture-in-picture mode is what Microsoft calls the new “Compact Overlay” window which can be used by Universal Windows Apps to show an overlay window over all the other apps in Windows 10. For instance, if you are watching a video in the Movies & TV app, you will be able to use new Compact Overlay view to watch that video on an overlay while you are working on something else. The new Compact Overlay windows work just like the normal windows in Windows 10, which means developers will be able to customize how the overlays look and work just like they can modify their apps. Microsoft says the new Compact Overlay window support is coming to the Movies & TV app, as well as the Skype Preview app in the near-future which is really nice to see. And once the Windows 10 Creators Update is released, the new Compact Overlay feature should start arriving on other third-party apps in Windows 10.
In addition to the new Compact Window feature, Microsoft is adding a new Dynamic Lock feature to Windows 10 which is also known as “Windows Goodbye”. As we reported previously, the Dynamic Lock feature is Windows 10 automatically locks your PC when you are away from the PC. Microsoft achieves this functionality by tracking your phone (paired via Bluetooth) — so for example, if your paired phone is not near your PC, Windows 10 will automatically log you off. This feature is disabled by default, but you will be able to enable it by heading over to the Settings app in Windows 10. Do keep in mind that there’s a bug in build 15031 which causes the Devices section in the Settings app to crash, thus preventing users from pairing a new device.
With the latest build of Windows 10, Microsoft is also updating the share icon in Windows which is quite an interesting upgrade. Microsoft is also adding full-screen support for the Game Bar to 52 more games with the latest build.
Windows 10’s latest build is available to Insiders in the Fast Ring right now, and you can get it by heading over to the Settings app in Windows 10.
