No Edge On Windows 7, 8, iOS Or Android, Microsoft Insists
« on: September 17, 2015, 08:24:27 PM »
Although the overall market share of Edge, the new web browser included in Windows 10 remains low for the time being, there are users that want to see it ported to other platforms.

One big reason for that is support syncing and an overall seamless usage experience regardless of operating system or device form factor. Basically, the public demands versions for Windows 7 and 8, as well as iOS, Android and possibly Mac OS X.

But mostly the first four.

Now a case can be made for bringing it to Windows 8, as this is still a modern version of Windows with support for many of the underlying code base that Edge uses.

Modern apps and all.

However, Redmond still has no plans to launch its new web browser on other platforms, and wants it to remain a Windows 10 exclusive feature. For the time being, at least.

This strategy was, once again, reiterated by members of the Microsoft Edge Development Team in their recent Q&A session with fans on Twitter.

They stressed that the goal right now is to make Edge truly powerful and rich in terms of features and options, and only then will they think of bringing it to rival platforms. Or other versions of Windows, for that matter.

Then again, given the company’s interest to port it solutions to Android and iOS, there is a chance that Microsoft might release Edge on competing platforms.

Whether that happens in the next year or not, that be the question.
