Fix For Surface Pro 3 Battery Degradation Incoming
« on: July 28, 2016, 06:50:24 AM »
Houston, we have a problem! The Surface Pro 3 battery issues are somewhat upsetting, considering the fact that they have started failing for users shortly after the expiration of the warranty.

While not widespread, users have been complaining about battery degradation for more than a week.

And Microsoft was quick to respond to this, saying that fixing this was a top priority for their team.

In fact, the device received a firmware update a few days back, which apparently did not the fix the problem. Users have only encountered these issues in Surface Pro 3 models with SIMPLO batteries, leading to speculation that this may be a hardware problem.

However, Redmond has confirmed in a forum post that this is not the case, and a software solution is in development to rectify this.

Quote
“We are aware of some customers reporting a scenario with their Surface Pro 3 batteries in which the system is reporting lower battery capacity than expected. We’ve isolated this to a limited number of customers experiencing this issue.

Based on our investigations we can confirm that it is not an issue with the battery cells, and we believe this is something that can be addressed via software.

We’re working through the details of how we deliver that.”

While it is not yet clear that whether all Surface Pro 3 units are having battery troubles, at least we know that Microsoft has nailed the problem and a fix is coming soon.

In the meantime, you can find out which brand of battery your Surface Pro 3 houses by opening up the command prompt and typing “powercfg /batteryreport”. Then enter the URL of the battery report that is generated in a browser.
