CES 2016: AMD Polaris Radeon GPU Revealed For CES
« on: January 04, 2016, 09:30:59 PM »

Polaris is AMD’s major technological effort to get back on track in the battle against Nvidia.

The company will unveil its 14nm FinFET Polaris GPU Architecture at CES. It plans to use chips and cards based on this technology to win back market share from its arch rival.

With the promise of more than doubling the performance per watt over previous generations of GPUs, Polaris will make the PC graphics market more competitive. It will also signal a new era of battle when it comes to Windows 10 gaming.

Older AMD Radeon video technology got a considerable free power boost from DirectX 12, so it will be interesting to see how this new generation of technology benefits.

Samples are shipping to AMD’s OEM partners now. Products should ship mid-year to provide the next upgrade refresh of PCs with a more powerful video option. With DX12 games arriving by then, things could be about to get very interesting.

AMD’s Polaris Future

The Polaris architecture is based around 14-nanometer Fin Field Effect Transistor (FinFET) technology. But will power efficiency and the die shrink equate to more raw speed?

AMD will make the big reveal in a press event on Tuesday at CES, but states in an early press release that:

Quote
“Polaris-based GPUs are designed for fluid frame rates in graphics, gaming, VR and multimedia applications running on compelling small form-factor thin and light computer designs. Our new Polaris architecture showcases significant advances in performance, power efficiency and features.

2016 will be a very exciting year for Radeon fans driven by our Polaris architecture, Radeon Software Crimson Edition and a host of other innovations.”
Polaris is 4th generation Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, supporting HDMI 2.0a and DisplayPort 1.3, with 4K h.265 encoding and decoding.

Here’s a new video showing off the slides and discussing the technology.

Are you impressed by the noises coming out of AMD, or do you think it will continue to lag Nvidia in the sales stakes? Do thin or small PCs bother those in to gaming?

Expect hardware partners to announce plenty of products as soon as the official reveal is done. Check AMD’s site for more details after the event.
