If you are still running the vanilla version of Windows 7 and yet to install the Service Pack 1 of the OS, be on the lookout! Microsoft is about to automatically install the update to consumers via its Windows Update service, starting tomorrow.
Service Pack 1 is actually a couple of years old now, and has been widely applied on a lot of Windows 7 installations. But if for some reason your (or your company) does not want to install it, consider this as a bit of a heads up.
Microsoft detailed the news in a
post on the official Windows blog:
“Updating customers to Windows 7 SP1 is part of our ongoing effort to ensure continued support and improved security updates for customers who have not yet installed SP1. Windows 7 SP1 was previously available on Windows Update but required user action to install. Starting tomorrow, the installation will be fully automatic with no user action required for those who already have Automatic Update enabled.”
While support for the RTM version of Windows 7 is set to expire on April 9, 2013, not all PCs running Windows 7 RTM will be getting the update — machines that are managed by a Microsoft management tool like Systems Center Configuration Manger (SCCM) or WSUS Server can void the SP1 if necessary.
But considering the range of improvements SP1 brings, it is hard to imagine that many will not want to install the update on the computers.
As is the case with most large updates from Microsoft, the SP1 will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months. The update itself can range in size anywhere from 44 MB to 533 MB.
