SteamVR coming to all Windows Mixed Reality headsets this month
« on: November 09, 2017, 12:15:49 PM »

The availability of Steam’s large library of VR titles is a very important crutch to the early viability of the Windows Mixed Reality platform.

So far only developers had access to SteamVR games on Windows Mixed Reality, but the Rolling Stones reports that the feature will be rolling out to all users sometime this month, likely around the 15th.

Apparently, the feature would have users step through a SteamVR bridge or portal app and end up in the usual SteamVR home, from where they can select from the full library of SteamVR apps, some of which work well and apparently some which do not.

When the feature was announced Valve’s Joe Ludwig said “Working with Microsoft to include SteamVR compatibility with these devices is also a big step in growing VR as an open platform for developers and consumers. With a broad range of hardware options available from leading PC manufacturers, the Steam community will have more choice than ever to experience the amazing potential of VR.”

Microsoft had earlier promised the feature would come to consumers by the holiday, though notably still in preview.

So far Microsoft has not revealed any numbers, so there is no clear idea how the Windows Mixed Reality platform is doing to date, but massively expanding the library of apps can only help move them in the right direction.
