Trojan hiding in pirated iWork '09
« on: March 11, 2009, 11:24:03 PM »
Apple has been hit with a Trojan have a read here.

Thousands of Mac operating systems have been infected in the past week as pirated copies of the latest Apple iWorks '09 containing Trojan horse malware have been downloaded and installed.

The infected copies of iWork have been circulating on file sharing sites and BitTorrent trackers; US firm Intego Security estimates that at least 20,000 people have already downlaoded these files.

The pirated iWork software contains a Trojan horse called OSX.Trojan.iServices.A, which is installed when the user installs 'iWorkServices' (as part of overall installation) to load as a start-up item on the host Mac.

While the pirated iWork software in question is completely functional, after installation the malware begins to take effect.

"The malicious software connects to a remote server over the internet; this means that a malicious user will be alerted that this Trojan horse is installed on different Macs, and will have the ability to connect to them and perform various actions remotely," said Intego on its site.

According to Symantec the malware is also known as OSX.Iwork, OSX/IWService and OSX/iWorkServ.A and it is "a Trojan horse that runs on Mac OS X and opens a back door on the compromised computer".

Damage level is low while removal is easy, says Symantec.
