Smartphone displays seem to be getting bigger and bigger all the time, but I still wouldn’t want to use a Samsung Galaxy Note with a 5.3 inch screen to watch a movie with a friend. A company called GeChic has a solution – the On-Lap 1302.

It’s a 13.3 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display which you can use as a secondary display for a laptop or an external monitor for a smartphone, camera, or other device.

The solution is kind of portable since the On-Lap 1302 can run off a battery pack without drawing any power from your phone or from an outlet. It weighs about 1.4 pounds, which is about what an iPad weighs.

But the system is kind of clunky. You need a series of adapters to get it to work with a smartphone, and it will only work with phones that already offer some sort of video output.

The display also doesn’t seem to want to stand up on its own — the demo video shows a series of stacking blocks used to hold it in place. I recommend skipping to the two minute mark if you actually want to see the display in action.

All things considered, if you really need a larger screen you might just be better off buying a tablet… or using a laptop or TV to watch your movies. But if you’re interested in dropping $230 on a 13 inch external display, Newegg should have some in stock next month.
