February, by all accounts, is about to end, and Microsoft’s next operating system upgrade is about to make its public debut in just a few weeks. And although the company is yet to provide any hints about the launch date, unofficial sources are abuzz.

A recent report by WZor, a leaker with good track record on all things Windows, claimed that Windows 8.1 Update 1 could launch as early as March — for MSDN subscribers, that is. This is another way of saying that the update could hit he web soon after that.

Public launch could take place on April 1, just in time for the BUILD 2014 developer conference.

But now a new report by regular Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott says that Windows 8.1 Update 1 will hit MSDN on April 2, while everyone else will get it via Windows Update on April 8.

Obviously, the two reports have a difference of just a few days, and one might be inclined to put more faith in what WZor is claiming. But the big picture here is that the software titan is now applying finishing touches to its next big operating system bet.

While Windows 8.1 Update 1 is not all that high on new features, there are enough usability changes and support for new hardware form factors that make it a significant upgrade.

More details should be with us next month, one way or another.
