Acer has finally unveiled the first ever 8-inch tablet running Windows 8 during the Computex 2013. This tablet by Acer is the first ever device with 8-inch screen and still running full Windows 8 x86 version instead, of stripped version named Windows RT.

Named as the Iconia W3, this small 8-inch tablet is powered by an Intel Atom processor, 32 or 64GB of internal storage with a smaller 8-inch screen with resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels.

Acer Iconia W3 has started a new era of smaller Windows powered tablets whereas, currently, there are 10-inch or larger screen tablets available.

This change in the screen size has been made after the changes in the Windows 8 hardware certification where screen resolutions of as low as 1024 x 768 pixels were allowed.

Acer Iconia W3 tablet has the following specifications:

  • 11.3mm in thickness

  • 540 grams in weight

  • Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz

  • 32 or 64GB of internal storage

  • 8.1-inch screen with resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels

  • Upto 8 hourds of battery life

  • 2MP front and back cameras

  • Bluetooth 4.0

  • Micro-HDMI port

  • Micro-USB port

  • Micro SD card slot

  • Optional 13.3-inch dockable keyboard

  • Pre-installed Office 2013 Home & Student with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote

Although, this smaller member of Windows 8 tablets family can’t be considered smaller in specifications but, still with full x86 Windows 8 version, it won’t be able to snap apps for now. But, once the Windows 8.1, the update for Windows 8 with support for smaller screen resolutions is released, you would be able to snap the apps on your desired locations on screen with upto 1024 x 768 pixels of screen resolutions supported for snap.

Acer Iconia W3 would be available for pre-orders few days from now and would cost $329 for 32GB model while the 64GB one would be priced $379. This tablet might be a competitor for Apple’s iPad mini which cost $476 from Amazon and carries similar specifications. The optional dockable keyboard would cost you $24 – $27 depending on the color.
