Download Windows 10 IoT Core
« on: August 11, 2015, 03:07:11 PM »
Fancy term for the slimmed down version of Microsoft’s Internet of Things operating system, but you can now download Windows 10 IoT Core, as this version is now generally available.

Along with developer tools that support a number of maker boards on the market.

Like say, the Raspberry Pi 2 and MinnowBoard Max.

Fancy names, too.

But interest in these small and inexpensive hardware devices is at an all-time high. And to capitalize on this, Microsoft is giving away this version of the operating system for free in order to generate developer interest and increase the adoption of Windows in the IoT space.

In terms of improvements, Redmond has finally ironed out the issues from the prerelease version of Windows 10 IoT Core, and added in a few new features.

You can find the complete changelog on Microsoft’s Developers page.

However, here’s a brief rundown:

  • Improved support for Python and Node.js, including a new Express Node.js project template

  • GPIO performance on the Raspberry Pi 2 has improved by 8X to 10X

  • Analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) are now supported via breakout boards and ICs

  • New Universal Windows Platform (UWP) APIs give apps easy control over system management features like time zone and network connections

And in order to help developers get started, the company has also put up various resources.

Starting with a few examples on its GitHub page, along with videos that demonstrate what others have created with this embedded operating system. Speaking of which, development on Windows 10 IoT Core is simple and straightforward.

All you need is a PC running the latest Windows 10 build and Visual Studio 2015.
