Microsoft keeps updating Windows to bring new features, improvements, and fixes. However, every Windows version is not supported forever and eventually meets what the software giant calls “end of servicing.” The company is now reminding users about the end-of-service date of Windows 11, version 21H2, released almost two years ago.
According to the official Microsoft Learn document page, Windows 11, version 21H2 Home and Pro versions will reach the end of servicing on October 10, 2023. When Windows versions reach the end of servicing, they no longer receive security updates from Microsoft, leaving the PCs vulnerable to malware and all kinds of threats. In other words, Windows 11, version 21H2 users will stop receiving security updates after October 10, but users will be able to continue using their PCs like previously.
Users running Windows 11, version 21H2 Education, Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise are not impacted. Microsoft will continue to support Windows 11 Education, Enterprise, and IoT versions until October 8, 2024.
To continue getting security updates from Microsoft, you will need to upgrade to a version of Windows that has not reached the end of servicing. If you’re running Windows 11 21H2, you should upgrade to Windows 11 22H2, which is also known as Sun Valley 2, to continue getting security updates beyond October 10. Besides guaranteed security updates, Windows 11 22H2 offers a plethora of new features, improvements, and fixes.
Microsoft is also rumored to be working on Windows 11 “23H2,” said to be released later this year. It’s currently testing lots of new features with Windows 11 Insiders before making them available for the Windows 23H2 update. One of the biggest functionalities coming to the 23H2 update is the ability to group and ungroup taskbar icons. The software giant also has ambitious plans next year with Windows 12.
As for Windows 11, version 22H2, Microsoft has set the end of servicing date as October 8, 2024, for Home and Pro editions, while the Education and Enterprise will get one more year to upgrade to a newer version of Windows.
