At the Build 2023 developer conference, Microsoft hinted at several Windows 11 and futured, updates. Most intriguing could be Microsoft confirm preparing to launch a new version of Windows, potentially called Windows 12.

During one of the keynotes, the attention was drawn to a screenshot that included references to a session titled “next-gen of Windows”. Could this be hinting at the next-generation Windows 12?

Microsoft before referred to a so called Next Valley Prototype Design, the term for their next-gen Windows. Based on Microsoft's internal tests Windows 12 may present a very different looking desktop with severall unique features like a floating taskbar and changed system tray.

Evidence supporting this new design can be seen in the preview builds of Windows 11 builds wich included an option to disable the system tray clock and date features Microsoft is reportedly experimenting with internally.

So all rumours point towards the possibility of a new Windows version. Moreover, Microsoft might not announce this new Windows version before 2024. Speculations suggest that Windows 12 could make its debut in 2024.

With a Windows 12 version Microsoft innovates, enhancing its operating system to enjoy a more refined and better, efficient user experience.

ARM, AI features
According to sources familiar with the development, Microsoft is optimizing Windows 12 for ARM processors, and we’ve also seen references to “deeply integrated AI features”, which are not Smart Snap UI and Windows Copilot.

For example, we recently spotted an AI-driven ‘Smart Snap’ layout in the preview builds of Windows 11. While Windows 11 already comes with a Snap feature that lets you easily snap apps in a multiscreen environment. Choosing between different layouts and sizes is possible, but AI integration automatically groups apps in a snap layout.

Windows 12 is believed to be part of Microsoft’s Windows Core project, which focuses on creating a modular and customizable version of Windows for various form factors. The integration of in-house ARM chips could further optimize the hardware and software experiences offered by Windows 12.

With Windows 12’s silicon-optimized version and new ARM chips, Microsoft could create a powerful, efficient, and AI-focused platform. This move could position Microsoft as a strong contender against Apple’s M chips in the rapidly evolving computing landscape.

While these plans and the related job listings suggest a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy, it is essential to note that the company’s plans may change before the release of Windows 12 and ARM chips.
