Windows 10 Design Was Inspired By A User Concept
« on: October 08, 2014, 04:16:12 AM »
It is not often companies take concepts created by fans and designers into account, but as far as the Windows 10 design is concerned, this is exactly what happened.

There was this concept created by Jay Machalani for Windows 9 a little while back.

And now we have confirmation that Microsoft was actually interested in his approach, and even invited the designer to discuss his ideas in detail. The similarities between both designs are quite startling when you look at them — particularly in terms of how the Start Menu looks.

The Verge also spotted these similarities.

A company representative for Microsoft confirmed that the software titan regularly checks out these concepts. In the words of Albert Shum, general manager of design and content at Microsoft:

Quote
“It was great to meet Jay and hear his design thinking. We always love engaging with smart, passionate people who look at the world and see new possibilities.”
Good going.

Also ties into the notion that Microsoft is indeed listening to user feedback and taking it into account when developing these modern versions of Windows.

In terms of similarities between the concept and Windows 10, we’ve got almost identical Start Menu designs, with Live Tiles and a resizable mode. Jay was also one of the firsts to visualize windowed Metro apps and getting rid of the Charms bar.

All features that Microsoft is currently working on, albeit in a bit more refined fashion.
