Microsoft Going With A Flat Look For Windows 10 Icons
« on: October 04, 2014, 06:44:38 AM »
Oh, the irony. If you were in the camp that wanted a refresh of the Windows 10 icons, then boy, are you in for a sweet surprise. Icons on Windows have been rather flat these past few versions.

Which is to say that not much changed in terms of design. Windows 10 however looks like it is going to bring some changes — changes with a flat new look.

Microsoft is all in with their simple, clean and levelled design philosophy, which marked its arrival alongside the Metro interface, or rather Modern UI. But that was reserved for the Live Tiles and other visual elements of that environment up until now.

The desktop side of things, the traditional icons mostly stayed the same in Windows 8. You know, the legacy icons, Computer, Recycle Bin and all that other stuff.

However, judging by how things are shaping up, Redmond is all ready to give icons in Windows 10 a modern new look. And unsurprisingly, the company is going for a flat direction this time around. As the image shows, the new design is based on basic primary colors and simple line work.

Don’t know about you guys, but this is certainly not the most exciting thing about the new OS.

What happened to richer, fuller, more colorful icons? Other operating platforms still seem to have them. Still early days, but this seems to be the general direction Microsoft has settled on. Will they be used on the desktop? Will they look as good? We’ll just see.

They are functional sure, but they do make one yearn for the splash of colors of yesteryears.
