Toshiba said today it is shipping its newest 12-inch Dynapad tablet, which is powered by Windows 10.
The Japanese company made the announcement at the 2016 International CES, the big tech trade show in Las Vegas this week.
The new Windows tablet measures just 0.27 inches high and weighs 1.28 pounds. It uses digital ink technology from Wacom, so writing on the tablet with an electronic pen feels like you’re writing on paper, the company said. Toshiba is taking preorders for the $570 tablet on its website today, and will begin selling the device in Microsoft stores in late January.
“Precision digital inking technology is the next frontier of truly personal computing,” said Philip Osako, senior director of product marketing, in a statement. “Advances in engineering and pen technology have enabled us to create an amazingly thin and light tablet that’s ideal for instant creativity while also offering the versatility to immediately transition to a clamshell form factor for productivity. Toshiba dynaPad is the ultimate digital notebook.”
Toshiba has created “active electrostatics TruPen” to deliver pen precision and accuracy, allowing you to sketch images and draw on the tablet. The device is aimed at designers, artists, and note-takers. The battery-powered digitizer pen supports 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity. The pen battery can last for more than 1,000 hours.
The screen is a full HD display with 1920 x 1280 pixels. Toshiba uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with native damage resistance and an anti-fingerprint coating. The case has a carbon fiber housing and a rubberized finish. There’s an optional full-size keyboard with a 19 millimeter pitch and 1.5 millimeter stroke for easier typing.
You can convert the tablet to a clamshell laptop for productivity apps. The tablet comes with TruNote, a handwriting app that lets you take lecture or meeting notes and make detailed hand drawings. It also comes with TruCapture for capturing images and TruRecorder for voice recordings.
The tablet has an Intel Atom x5 Z8300 processor, flash storage, and two Micro USB 2.0 ports, a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 128 gigabytes, a two-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus.
Toshiba also announced its Canvio Premium, a series of new portable hard disk drives with both USB Type-A and USB Type-C compatibility.
And Toshiba announced the TransMemory Ex Dual, a dual port Type-A and Type-C flash drive engineered for quick and easy transfers between devices.
The Canvio 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB devices will sell for $85, $130, and $150, respectively. The TransMemory Ex Dual will sell for $40.
