Internet Explorer To Now Get Security Updates Separately
« on: January 16, 2017, 07:36:40 AM »
Separate packs for IE patches. Internet Explorer may not be web browser it once was, but it is still an important part of the Windows 10 platform, more so for companies and business organizations.

Those who continue to rely on this old web browser for their custom and legacy software.

Microsoft, in late 2016, decided to adopt a new approach for the updates it releases for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 — switching from individual patches to a rollup model that is split into three different, individual parts.

We have Security Monthly Quality Update, which the company also refers to as Monthly Rollup, and then there is the Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup, called Preview Rollup, and finally a Security Only Quality update, known as a Security Only update.

Well, starting next month, the company will introduce a new change that will see it deliver security rollups that are smaller in size. And thereby easier to deploy for users.

As Redmond explains:

Quote
“With this separation, the Security Only update package size will be significantly reduced, but you will need to deploy and install the Internet Explorer update to remain secure for the latest supported version of the browser. Note that the Internet Explorer update will not install or upgrade to the latest supported version of Internet Explorer if not already present.

To simplify installation for Monthly Rollup users, the new Internet Explorer update will leverage the same installation applicability definition as the Security Only update (explained above), meaning that it will not install on a PC that has already installed the Monthly Rollup (or Preview Rollup) from the same or later month.”

As noted above, this change will come into effect in February 2017, and from then on, updates for Internet Explorer will no longer be included in the Security Only update.

The IE security update will be released on Patch Tuesday as well, in case you’re wondering, and will also include patches for IE11 and IE10 on Windows Server 2012. The Preview Rollup, meanwhile, will continue to be shipped on the third Tuesday of the month.
