Due to Microsoft’s legacy browser, Internet Explorer, you may need to reboot your PC soon.
Microsoft has released emergency patches for various versions of Windows following a Google security researcher finding a zero-day exploit in Internet Explorer.
Microsoft writes:
CVE-2018-8653 | Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability
A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way that the scripting engine handles objects in memory in Internet Explorer. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that an attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
In a web-based attack scenario, an attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit the vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website, for example, by sending an email.
The security update addresses the vulnerability by modifying how the scripting engine handles objects in memory.
For those on the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, Microsoft has
KB4483235, which brings the build number to 17763.195. You can

For those on Windows 10 April 2018 Update, or version 1803, Microsoft is delivering
KB4483234, which brings the build number to 17134.472. You can
manually download it here.
If you are on the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, or version 1709, you will get
KB4483232, bringing the build number to 16299.847. You can
manually download it here.
Going all the way to the Windows 10 Creators Update, or version 1703,
KB4483230 will bring your build number to 15063.1508 and can
manually download it here. As Windows 10 1703 is unsupported for Windows 10 Home and Pro, this is for Education and Enterprise only.
Poor souls on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) and Windows Server 2016 get
KB4483229, taking them to build 14393.2670. You can
manually download it here.
Lastly, Long-Term Servicing Channel users are still on the original version of Windows 10 will get
KB4483228, taking them to build number 10240.18064. You can
manually download it here.
Microsoft has unfortunately not released the patch which lets you uninstall Internet Explorer yet.
