As the US government’s war against Huawei heats up, the company’s chief legal officer spoke about how the inclusion of Huawei in the country’s list of blacklisted companies will directly affect billions of American consumers.
Song Liuping told reporters at a recent press conference in Shenzhen, China that the decision to ban the telecommunications equipment and services provider will harm customers in over 170 countries, including more than three billion consumers who use Huawei products and services.
“Politicians in the US are using the strength of an entire nation to come after a private company. By preventing American companies from doing business with Huawei, the government will directly harm more than 1,200 US companies. The banning of Huawei in the US is just part of the ongoing tension between the US and China.
Citing the company as a threat to national security, Washington ordered it to be blacklisted, but the telecom company has repeatedly denied the allegations hurled at it and stressed that it is independent of the Chinese government.
Song reiterated that all the US government has is speculation but no evidence to support its claim.
Huawei hits backHuawei has filed a motion for summary judgment, asking US courts to rule the ban ordered upon it as unconstitutional. A court hearing is set to be held on September 19.
The telecom giant currently faces 23 criminal charges filed by the US Justice Department for alleged theft of trade secrets, fraud, and obstruction of justice.
In addition to those, the US government is also seeking the extradition of Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer at Huawei, from Canada.
Other countries that have blocked Huawei from their 5G network infrastructure include Australia and New Zealand.
