So the most common question I get asked is “what is a Windows Driver?”

What is a Windows 10 Driver?

Well here’s the best way to explain this for those who don’t know. A driver is a piece of software that tells your computer how to handle a device or other software.

Here’s a quick example.

You go to a store and buy a web camera or web cam.

What should happen is, when you get back home and plug it in, Windows 10 will automatically detect the new hardware and set it up.

Done deal, no problem.

Unfortunately, sometimes when you have equipment that comes from a smaller and less established vendor, things don’t always work that well.

In that case, Windows 10 will try and automatically detect the Windows 10 driver and if it can’t, it’ll tell you that you need to get the driver from the vendor.

Basically just like Windows 10 Codecs, drivers are really, really important.

Now like I said before, in most cases, Windows 10 will find the driver for you but if Windows 10 doesn’t have the driver you need, you can often find drivers you need on the manufacturer’s website.

Drivers are used for a TON of stuff.

Stuff like:

• Storage devices like hard disk, CD-ROM, and floppy disk buses (ATA, SATA, SCSI)

• file system support

• Image scanners

• Digital cameras

• printers

• video adapters

• Network cards

• pointing devices such as mice, keyboards, USB, etc

• Sound cards

Basically, drivers power Windows and allow the Operating System to interact with other software and hardware.
