Windows 9 Might Be The Last Standalone Version
« on: August 27, 2014, 04:48:22 PM »
This is big! Everyone knows that Microsoft is working on the next version of Windows, Windows 9, but one source claims that this could be the last standalone version of the OS.

And that source is Mary Jo Foley.

Redmond had talked about moving to a faster release cadence for Windows in the past, and we have seen signs of it with Windows 8. But now the software titan is thinking along the lines of how Apple rolls with OS X — which is updating this main platform instead of releasing new versions.

As Foley states:

Quote
“Instead of delivering Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows 12, Microsoft’s focus will be on updating Threshold.”
Perhaps the biggest reason for Microsoft embracing this strategy is that the company wants to keep its users fully updated and running the latest version of the operating system.

Windows XP has been experience enough. Countless users are still running the decade old operating system months after end of support. And the last thing the company wants is something similar with Windows 7, the most popular operating system on the globe.

Regardless, Windows 9 could prove to be a gamer changer in this regard — and a key departure on how the world has come to know of Microsoft’s flagship operating system.

The last standalone version of Windows.

Who would have thought!
