Samsung UK today proved today that some tech companies can keep a secret, as they announced a new Android phone today – the Samsung Galaxy Apollo – which appeared unexpectedly on Samsung UK’s home page.
The phone will be an Android 2.1 device, and will ship with a 3.7-inch OLED screen (we suspect that it will be “Super” OLED, Samsung’s own brand of high-res OLED displays that are just a little bit more special). It will have a 800MHz processor that while it won’t make the Galaxy Apollo the fastest horse in the barn, it should be suitable (the Motorola Droid had a lot less than that and was a suitable device).
Other features include a 5-megapixel camera (which can take 720p video), GPS, WiFi, etc. etc.
This phone wasn’t completely off the radar of gadget blogs, as it was immediately recognized as the Samsung M100S, a phone that Samsung showed off in South Korea earlier this year.
I wonder what LG thinks of the name. LG and Samsung are intense rivals in the whole consumer electronics industry. LG has a phone coming out called the LG Apollo that will run Windows Phone 7. Think it’s coincidence that Samsung has a similarly named smartphone. Don’t – I’m sure LG doesn’t.
Nothing was released on carriers or release date. Samsung still has that special Android event in the United States on June 29th. Maybe they’ll bring the Samsung Galaxy Apollo over here for us Yanks.
