Today Motorola and Verizon officially launched the Motorola DROID X. The Android 2.1 powered DROID X is equipped with a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display that offers the same 854 x 480 pixel resolution as the original DROID. The camera, however, is much improved over the original DROID's and is capable of recording 720p HD video as well as 8 megapixel stills. Also among the most notable specs is the 1GHz OMAP processor that was built by Texas Instruments.
Lacking the keyboard of the original DROID, the new DROID X comes with a multi-touch capable virtual keyboard as well as the gesture based SWYPE keyboard that has been gaining popularity among smartphone users.
According to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, the DROID X is equipped with a number of features that will improve both call quality and data capabilities. Among those are "high performance diversity antennas" and three separate microphones, one of which is dedicated to picking up ambient noise so that it can be filtered out of conversations. Jha said that the phone's 1570mAh battery should allow for a full day's worth of heavy use, similar to that of the original DROID. He also added that a 1930mAh battery pack will be offered in the coming months, and that it will add a mere 1mm of additional thickness to the 9mm thick DROID X.
Unlike previous Motorola Android smartphones on Verizon, the DROID X will be equipped with MOTOBLUR social networking capabilities, though Jha noted that they will be less obvious than on other MOTOBLUR devices.
The EV-DO 3G data capability of the DROID X can be shared through a mobile hotspot service that is similar to that seen on the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus smartphones. The phone's data connection can be shared with up to 5 different Wi-Fi devices at once.
The Motorola DROID X is set to go on sale on July 15 for a price of $199, after a $100 rebate. It will require Verizon's $29.99 smartphone data plan. The Mobile Hotspot feature, which comes with its own 2GB data quota, will cost an additional $20 per month.
