Last week, we covered the major antenna issue some users were experiencing with the iPhone 4, you know, the whole “iPhone death grip” thing. The issue occurs when a new iPhone is held a particular way (see above) that results in a blocked signal leading to a drop in connectivity. Now, TechCrunch reports that Apple has posted at least eight open positions for experienced antenna or wireless engineers. The move by Apple to hire engineers around antenna and wireless technologies hints at some acknowledgement of the reported antenna issue surrounding the iPhone 4 and the company’s desire to prevent a similar design mistake from happening in the future.
The open positions include:
3 – Antenna Engineer iPad/iPhone
2 – iPhone OTA Wireless Systems Engineer
3 – RF Systems Validation Engineer iPhone
Apple is clearly not looking for someone new in this field either since one of the requirements is 10+ years of experience. Though these new hires may be limited in their ability to implement a fix to the current iPhone 4 issues, since part of the issue may be an overall design flaw, there’s little doubt the move is an attempt to prevent an embarrassing antenna problem in the future. What’s ironic is the new placement of the antenna in the iPhone 4 was to help with reception issues people reported on the AT&T network.
