The iPhone 5 already exists in prototype form, according to a supposedly reliable source cited by tech site Dvice.

These rumours come with a big fat disclaimer, stating clearly that not only are they not confirmed, but that we don’t believe a word of it either. Dvice claims to have heard word from an Apple insider than the iPhone heading to US carrier Verizon will be significantly different from the current iPhone 4. So different in fact that it couldn’t be considered anything but the next-gen iPhone, or iPhone 5.

According to the source, the Verizon iPhone features a larger 3.7-inch screen, a 1.2GHz processor — faster than the iPhone 4’s 1GHz A4 processor — and will use an internal antenna, circumventing the signal issues the iPhone 4 has been plagued by. Dvice claims that Apple has been pressured into making these changes by Verizon, but we don’t buy it. Not only would this new iPhone dimish buyer confidence in Apple, it would significantly increase buyer frustration. And why would Apple change screen size suddenly when 3.5 inches has done just fine over four generations of devices.

We smell a rat — but who is it? Is the Dvice’s source just playing with Dvice, or is this fabled source merely made up? Or perhaps we’re just being too cynical and Apple really is planning on a new iPhone iteration.

One thing you can be sure of — if it’s coming soon, iPhone 4 users really aren’t going to be happy.
