Did you know Windows Live had its own blogging platform? No? That’s not surprising. The platform has just 7 million blogs. Meanwhile, blog platform WordPress has 26 million sites using it, claiming 8.5% of the entire Web and 250 million people visiting WordPress-powered sites any month.

So it should also come as no surprise that Microsoft has decided to kill its own unsuccessful blogging platform and migrate its bloggers over to WordPress’. Microsoft and Automattic, the company behind WordPress, announced their partnership at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference on Monday.

“Automattic and Microsoft have entered into a partnership to make WordPress.com the default blogging platform for Windows Live,” said Automattic chief Toni Schneider.

Schneider says that bloggers on Windows Live’s platform will have access to a migration tool to WordPress starting today. The migration will take place over the next few months.

This sounds like Microsoft is outsourcing its blog platform. But Windows Live director of product management Dharmesh Mehta  denied that it was, seeing it as more of a partnership.

Consolidation of services and products to companies that already do it better and have brand recognition.
