Microsoft took the lid off their Zune HD device on Tuesday May 26 2009. Mark that calendar folks because it’s also the day they effectively laid the smack down gauntlet down on Apple. If the leaked specs are true then all bets are off, and next weeks E3 will be a monumental shift for portable device hounds, gamers, music, and video lovers. Zune HD will be a device that will allow for HD content (720p) across the board to be accessible to users. Having HD radio alone being will be a revolution allowing for enhanced digital music, podcasts, and programing to be easy to get to. Built inside this device will be a new touch screen created using OLED technology a great step up in clarity from LCD devices used in most portable hand held mobile devices.
Add in a web browser and Xbox Live Arcade games, and you have the death of the Ipod Touch. Reason being is that the Xbox 360 platform is the most stable and robust HD machine in your living room.
Offering the type of synergy that doesn’t exist for anyone else in the industry. Sony can almost make the claim, but they have failed in truly integrating the products and services. So although they have to potential the jury is still out on their execution and efficiency to get it done.
No longer will there be a Video Marketplace on your Xbox 360 NXE dashboard, it will be replaced by the Zune Marketplace. Imediately letting you know that whatever content you have access to there you will have it available to your Zune HD. That will allow for new music deals with majors, independent artists, distributors and labels. Effectively creating a one stop shop similar to Itunes. That is scary because we know that Itunes does more than just music. This could lead to books and all sorts of digital media that is portable all of it in High Definition. The technology is no slouch either. Rumors abound that the Microsoft will be using Nvidia’s Tegra system on a chip technology to power the Zune. Nvidia has ben looking for ways to take their GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) technology to new heights by going head to head with CPU manufactures such as Intel. So this is the perfect oppourtunity for them in the Zune and mobile space. Microsoft is said to have components of Winmobile and Windows 7 as the OS (Operating System) for the Zune HD. With all the clamor and love coming from folks using the beta of Windows 7, a mobile version with features that intergrate it all makes perfect sense and centralizes the way we work across multiple platforms is great progress. Apple has some of this but not all, and they are becoming more of a manufacturing and less of an OS company everyday. How many versions the Iphone/Ipod/Itouch are we going to see? What Apple has proven though is that new platforms for apps and games is something the community and consumers will embrace.
This fact alone makes the tech, services, intergration and product of the Zune HD a formidable competitor for Apples wares. For consumers it is a leap forward that will be fun. Let me add one more tidbit for you. Microsoft over the course of the next year will be working with other mobile phone device makers to offer the Zune software to them. Just like Window’s mobile. If the Zune flies then when phone makers get their hands on this the sky truly will be the limit. Zune HD your time is now…
