Google is expected to push a new version of the Google Android Market app to smartphone users in the next few weeks, but if you don’t want to wait that long, hackers have already ripped the APK installer file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868767) for the new Market. It should install properly on on most devices running Android 2.2 and up, but it’s probably a good idea to backup your device before installing.

In addition to the new features Google told us about (new categories for widgets and live wallpapers, improved app description pages, a featured apps carousel, and so on), there’s one hidden gem: support for tablets with high resolution displays. When you use the new Market app on a tablet in landscape mode, it looks like the image above, with the carousel and categories on the left side of the screen and a list of apps on the right. On most phones, these two areas are stacked one on top of the other vertically.
