Title: Disabling Windows 8 DP Metro UI - Registry Hack
Post by: javajolt on September 15, 2011, 08:08:27 AM
If you are finding the New Metro UI confusing and perhaps even annoying you can disable it and enable the Classic Start Menu. Open regedit and navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

In the Right side find RPEnabled and change its value from "1" to "0" (without the ")

Restart your system.

Of course if you decide you want the Metro UI back simple reverse the process.

You get the same effect by renaming the shsxs.dll file in c:\windows\system32 to something else.   When I tried it though, somehow it just didn't seem right.  Maybe it's because I got used to finding all the Programs, called Apps in Win 8, Control Panel etc. and have shortcuts for all the ones I use.
I kinda like the touchscreen rectangles even though I don't have a touchscreen.

As I continue to use the Metro UI it has grown on me, and I do find myself switching back to Classic View once in a while.
