Redsn0w (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/) has long been one of the most important tools in the jailbreaking community. You can use redsn0w to jailbreak most iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models so that you can install apps that aren’t available in the official App Store and make other changes to your mobile device’s software. But while redsn0w has been updated a number of times over the past few years to support the latest versions of iOS, the jailbreaking utility hasn’t received any major new features in a while.

Now developer MuscleNerd says a big update is in the works (http://twitter.com/#!/MuscleNerd/status/114953222749290496) (opens twitter).

The new app will be divided into two sections. When you launch redsn0w you’ll see a button that lets you jailbreak your device and another for “extras” for advanced features involving manually choosing an IPSW file, fetching an SHSH blob, or entering “pwned DFU mode” so that you can use use iTunes to restore a custom IPSW.

The key difference between redsn0w 0.9.8b5_p8 and earlier versions, though, is that it will be able to grab some of the important bits from Apple and save them so that you don’t need to do it manually. Users won’t have to mess with IPSW files unless they want to.

The update should make jailbreaking a lot simpler for those that are new to the jailbreak scene — while offering easier access to advanced features for those that have been down this road a few times before.
