In the upcoming Office 2013, Microsoft's next office productivity suite, we will see support for the Strict Open XML format as well as the Open Document Format (ODF) 1.2. On top of that, we will have support for opening PDF documents for editing.

"By adding support for these standardized document formats, Microsoft Office 2013 provides users with more choice for office document interoperability. Regardless of your preferred document file format, the new Microsoft Office gives you more options for sharing, collaborating, and archiving office documents," Microsoft explains.
Aside from supporting these two formats, Microsoft has added the ability to open PDF files as editable Office documents, which the company calls "PDF Reflow." The idea behind this is to bring the contents of the PDF file back into an editable format using Word 2013, rather than making Word into a PDF reader/editor. Office 2013 Customer Preview was released in July and is expected to hit RTM in November with general availability in February of 2013
