No company has offered a new device designed to run webOS since HP discontinued its webOS phones and tablets in 2011. But now LG is getting ready to introduce the first new devices in years that run the operating system originally developed by Palm.
LG acquired the remnants of webOS from HP earlier this year, and now the company plans to show off smart TVs running the software at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
According to ZDNet Korea (http://www.zdnet.co.kr/news/news_view.asp?artice_id=20131219102928), the new LG TV will feature a 2.2 GHz dual-core ARM processor, 1.5GB of memory, and an operating system based on webOS which allows the TV to stream content from the internet and run apps.
It’s not clear at this point what webOS will look like on televisions. Some of the hallmark features of the smartphone and tablet versions were support for multitasking using a “card” style user interface, a universal search function, and support for apps developed using web technologies such as HTML5.
Some of those features would make no sense on a TV screen — but the underlying code could enable support for a powerful TV platform which can handle web apps, multitasking, and multimedia activities. LG will also provide tools for developers to create third-party apps that will run on webOS televisions.
