In a move that would delight the mobile app developers looking for better margins on their products, Microsoft is ensuring that they charge more than 99 cents for their premium apps posted on Microsoft's Windows Marketplace for Mobile, especially those designed for the latest mobile-device operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5.
The Microsoft move is apparently aimed at the Apple App Store, where developers can charge only up to 99 cents for an array of apps. In a similar move, Research In Motion (RIM) has already upped the least price for a number of mobile applications.
Justifying its stance, Microsoft has said that it would like to ensure that it is 'quality' and not 'quantity' that is of greater importance for the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Microsoft wants to convey that it would rather have the quality of apps reflected in their price tag, than the mere number of times an app is downloaded.
In a statement, Loke Uei Tan, Senior Product Manager on the Windows Mobile Team, said: "It's up to you play your pricing, but we would definitely want to promote that you make more money selling applications than selling your application in a dollar store. I know, 99 cents is interesting-yes, consumers like to pay 99 cents for applications.
But 99 cents, come on, I think your app is worth more than that!"
