With Microsoft’s new operating system right around the corner, the company has been paving the way for the launch. The Get Windows 10 app is one such way to lay the groundwork.

This application, essentially, notifies users of the free upgrade.

However, not all Windows 7 and 8.1 users can see this notification application, and there are a few possible reasons for that. Four, in fact, as highlighted by the Windows 10 FAQ (http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/windows-10-faq) section that Microsoft have recently put up.

As detailed:

• Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.

• Windows Update is turned off or is not set to receive updates automatically.

• You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.

• Your device is not running genuine Windows.

Fair points, and it’s easy to see why some people may not be seeing this particular application.

Particularly, those that have turned off the update functionality on their operating system, or blocked certain options for the process.

And while the first three issues can easily be resolved by enabling Windows Update, the fourth and final one requires users to purchase a genuine copy (http://www.windows8newsinfo.com/smf/index.php?topic=29514.0) of the operating system — in order to be eligible to receive Windows 10 for free upon launch.

That being said, Microsoft has also confirmed that the icon will not be displayed on devices that do not meet the base system requirements of Windows 10.

Additionally, those running the managed versions of the operating system or the Enterprise edition of Windows will need to get in touch with their system administrators for the upgrade to Windows 10, as there are additional steps involved.
