Spiceworks, an IT professionals’ network, has been polling IT departments in the US and Europe on their plans for Windows 10. The latest figures suggest some 73% plan to upgrade within two years, which is impressive, given the usual slow response of enterprise IT to any new operating system.

The report covers a wide range of business types and suggest that interest is growing rapidly, thanks in part to the dominance of the rapidly aging Windows 7 and older PCs among work forces.

With 96% of IT departments interested in the OS, Microsoft could well be on their way to a billion devices within the first year.

However, its a grimmer picture for Windows Mobile with 83% on iOS and 77% using Android or a mix of the two, leaving little room for Windows Mobile.

Less than a third of businesses are even considering adopting Windows Mobile, which may mean very little take up actually occurs once devices and the OS are on the market.

Microsoft must hope that the broad compatibility and data sharing between the unified operating systems will help drive greater Windows Mobile adoption. However, as BYOD takes hold, it seems unlikely that Lumia devices will be taking over the enterprise any time soon.

When it comes to Windows 10 features, 64% of IT pros are looking forward to the proper return of the Start button, 55% are keen on the free upgrade from previous editions, while 51% are tempted by improved built-in security.

Their key concern is stability, something that previous upgrade paths and programs has often failed to deliver. Given that Windows 10 can do an in-place upgrade, most IT departments will be more receptive to it.
