An analyst has recently shared his mind on just how big an effect Windows 10 will have on the Windows Phone platform, and what kind of changes the PC version of the operating system will bring.
The desktop flavor of Windows 10 certainly holds an enormous potential for the mobile platform.
As explained by Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research.
But that alone will not be enough to save the fledgling mobile OS — the Redmond based technology giant will have to play their cards just right in terms of strategy and hardware releases to lift Windows Phone to respectable heights.
This is how he put it:
Windows 10 does hold out some promise for Windows Phone, but it’s not going to make an enormous difference. Microsoft could abandon Windows on mobile if it continues to languish with a tiny market share. These bridges are designed to lower the barrier to entry for developers that currently can’t be bothered to do the development work from the ground up. But porting still involves some work, so the question as to whether it is worthwhile remains.”
Long story short, Microsoft has a lot of problem to resolve in Windows Phone.
Not just in the operating system itself, which is gaining new features each passing week, but with how it handles partner companies, marketing, and overall perception. The lack of flagship hardware, for example, has done an intensive amount of damage to the platform in certain markets.
And with a 3% worldwide market share overall, Microsoft will really need to pull off some miracles in trying to convince developers to port their applications to Windows 10 Mobile.
The tools are there, and small developers may bit, but the additional work involved in porting more advanced games and apps from Android and iOS, will take some effort. Let’s just hope the company is up to the task here.
